The Mazda CX-9, a mid-size crossover SUV, went through major changes in its two generations. The first generation (TB; 2006-2015) debuted with a 3.5L Ford V6 engine. That got upgraded to a 3.7L V6 in 2008, which gave it the power to pump out up to 274 hp and 270 lb-ft of torque. All of it was based on the Ford CD3 platform. In terms of design and safety features, the car was very innovative and followed Mazda's design philosophy with facelift after facelift. It then transitioned into the second generation (TC; 2016-present), where they adopted Mazda Skyactiv technology, which included a turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that could produce up to 227 hp on regular fuel and up to 250 hp on premium but also had an extra kick with being able to push out over 310 lb-ft of torque! With this newer version of the Mazda CX-9, they were more focused on making it lighter, more agile, and safer with an improved interior; however, this one didn't have as much cargo space or third-row comfortability as the first one did. The Mazda CX-9 won several awards for performance, design, and safety, including Motor Trend's SUV of the Year in 2008 and the IIHS Top Safety Pick+ Award in 2017, showing off its market appeal even though you can no longer buy them new in America anymore.

Model years of the Mazda CX-9 have experienced several problems. Oftentimes, it's the water pump that leads to serious engine damage because it fails. Other times, the transmission can be faulty, causing hard shifts and slips. And there's also been incidents where service brakes malfunctioned. Some of these issues come from manufacturing problems or poor design, and in worst-case scenarios, owners have had to do terrible repairs like completely replacing their engines. Updates, repairs, and rebuilds are how drivers get rid of transmission issues such as hard shifting or slipping that come from software inadequacies, and broken parts like damaged valve bodies or faulty shift solenoids were replaced or repaired for resolution. Lastly, service brakes have had malfunctions, including unwarranted warnings and increased stopping distances, highlighting systemic problems within the braking system's design or manufacturing. Not only do these affect your CX-9's overall performance, but they also raise significant safety concerns, so any owner should look out for regular maintenance appointments for comprehensive parts inspections or replacements.
