Launched for this 2022 model year, the Mazda MX-30 EV is the very first electric vehicle (EV) by Mazda. This particular model is known for having various powertrains. It comes with a battery-electric vehicle (BEV) model that has a 35.5 kWh lithium-ion battery pack that powers a 105 kW (141 hp; 143 PS) electric motor producing 264 Nm (195 lb-ft) of torque and can travel up to about 209 km (130 mi), with fast-charging support allowing for an 80% charge in approximately half an hour to forty-five minutes via a 40 kW DC charger. A plug-in hybrid variant was also added to the line-up, called the plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV). The MX-30 EV has a unique series drivetrain with a rotary engine serving as its range extender. The naturally aspirated single-rotor engine has an 830cc chamber volume and is only intended for recharging the battery. The MX-30 EV's "freestyle doors" are reminiscent of those on the RX-8. The suspension design consists of MacPherson struts at the front and a torsion beam at the rear. The car received safety recognition such as a five-star Euro NCAP rating and won the Red Dot Design Award in 2020 but its relatively short electric range, below the industry average, drew criticism. Nevertheless, this MX-30 EV represents Mazda's early steps into electrification while combining advanced technology with unique design elements.
